Jett Jamison and the Secret Storm

  1. Sister Gia and Jett strike up a special friendship. What attributes does Sister G have that make Jett want to know her better? Why do these attributes appeal to Jett at this point in her life?

  2. Answer question #1 replacing Sister Gia with Jett’s rabbit, Felix, a friend she’s had for much longer.

  3. Describe the attributes you hope to find in a friend. Why are these things important to you? What attributes do you have that make you a good friend?

  4. Jett notices changes in Louise, the librarian’s behavior. Describe how Louise changes and what you think caused her to change. Why do you think Louise decided to do what she did?

  5. Discuss how the plant, wisteria, resembles the town of Wisteria. Use as many of the five senses as possible!

  6. The book’s theme of silenced voices comes across in many ways. How many silenced voices can you find in the story? Make a list, choose one of them, and free that voice. Write a monologue from their point of view.

  7. Nature plays a big role in the story and includes both plants and animals, some of which appear to have a voice. Do you believe that plants and animals can communicate with each other or with humans? Why or why not? If you believe they can, give specific evidence why you do.

  8. The words of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Harriet Beecher Stowe have an impact on Jett. What other authors, past or present, do you think might also have helped Jett figure things out? Explain why you think so.

  9. The Wisteria Library is Jett’s safe place. Discuss why libraries are safe places and how they get that message across to patrons.

  10. When is it okay to tell someone else’s secret? When is it okay to keep a secret about yourself? Think about a time you had a secret and considered sharing it with someone you trust. What feelings and thoughts came up to help you decide whether to do so?

  11. What does the Secret Storm refer to in the title? (And how can a storm be secret anyway?!) Brainstorm ways things that you assume are loud can actually appear quiet and vice versa.

  12. Radio show host, Mr. Ed, doesn’t want children to be upset by reading books with topics that may be challenging emotionally, so he speaks out against Resurrecting the Dragon. He’s accused of being a book censor, but he believes he’s doing the right thing, that he is protecting children this way. Write a persuasive essay telling why you agree or disagree with Mr. Ed. Then, write a persuasive essay from the opposite point of view.
